Desire is a super sexy resort, and we obviously are big fans of it. That doesn’t mean they are perfect, and a common complaint with Desire is that they pressure new guests into signing up for a timeshare presentation during the check-in process. They don’t like to call it a timeshare but rather the Premier membership. They will offer you gifts and incentives to attend. You probably want to be firm and opt-out when they ask you four separate times about it. Once you have your room key, politely say no thanks and head to your room. If your room isn’t ready, head to the pool and start enjoying the sweet life.
You are on vacation and should enjoy it! If you really are interested in buying a timeshare aka Premier membership, you can negotiate it after you go home. Just about all of the information you hear in the timeshare pitch, you can find out from talking with guests in the pool as you enjoy your vacation.
The timeshare is not necessarily a bad deal, and many of our friends have bought it. It is just not smart to negotiate while drinking, partying, and having a very hot & sensual time. You are paying good money for your vacation, so why spend your time listening to a sales pitch?
If you wait till you get back home, you can take a harder negotiating position and avoid rushing into a big decision. Desire is very flexible on contract negotiations if you invest the time & effort for some hard negotiations. It would be best if you spoke with current Premier members to understand better the wide price range and wide range of negotiated bonus perks in their contracts. The lowest buy-in is around $8,000 to $10,000. Many people buy-in for $20,000 to $30,000. The size of your buy-in determines the number of free nights, & discounted nights, & possibly reduced rates for the ultra-premium Villas or Mansion, & airfare credits, plus other perks.
It is all very negotiable. Don’t assume you are receiving the same timeshare package as your friends. Some new Premier members are very disappointed when they didn’t take the time to carefully read their contract or pay attention to all the specific details. This is why we are fans of waiting on the timeshare decision. You are too likely to make a mistake and not negotiate the best deal for your own personal situation if you rush it. Though one of our friends negotiated a great deal when he first visited Desire because he is a skilled lawyer and his wife was sick the first two days, giving him plenty of time to negotiate. For most everyone else, it is better to take it slow and think twice. Do plenty of research before making this big-ticket purchase. If you search Google, you can probably find someone trying to sell their Desire timeshare to give you a better idea of its potential resale value.
We haven’t chosen the timeshare because we usually don’t have enough time in our schedule to visit Desire multiple times each year. When we find time in our schedule, we often can find a rate online that isn’t much higher than the discounted Premier membership rates.
The math didn’t add up for us, but the math has made great sense for many of our friends. It depends on how much you plan to visit Desire each year, & for how many years, & at what rate you can negotiate with them.
To be fair, Premier membership is not just about the money. It is also about the extra perks like complimentary room service, VIP check-in, access to the Desire yacht, and other perks that make Desire more enjoyable.
If you would like a taste of the Premier membership, you can ask an existing member for a referral week. This code gives you a discount and some perks, but you need to attend the timeshare presentation. If you join the Premier membership, the existing member who referred you can earn some cash.
PS Think twice before signing for a very long term. Climate change seems to be impacting Cancun. Each year it becomes a little bit hotter on the beach, and the seaweed growth is harder for the resort to manage.
