Drawbacks of Desire Resorts

We enjoy Desire and look forward to revisiting it, but it is definitely not perfect.

There are some real drawbacks, and other items are simply nitpicking. To help you better understand if Desire resorts is a good match for you, we will focus on the downsides. You might think they are no big deal or you might find think it is a deal-breaker.

The more you know, the better you can decide for yourself.

High Cost

Desire costs a good bunch of money that is out of the reach for many people. Hopefully, you make good money and can afford this premium vacation. It isn’t fair to say this is a cheap vacation when the cheapest option is around $3,000 a week, that is real money, and you can find much cheaper vacations.

Unconnected Villas

Desire is not a single hotel building with hallways protected from the sun & rain. They do provide golf umbrellas in all rooms which you’ll need if it does rain and you want to stay dry as you walk to dinner.

Incomplete Bar Offering

Desire does not stock a lot of specialty liquors. This is not a big issue because they have many other options to enjoy, but it is easy for them to fix, so it is annoying that they haven’t addressed it. We also wish they provided Gatorade and/or Red Bull in your room’s complimentary mini-fridge. It is available for purchase in the gift shop. Cold water, soda & beer is nice, but sometimes you need a bit of help rebounding from a heavy night of partying.

Limited Premium Restaurant Seats

The buffet offers good food, great service and is very enjoyable but sometimes you want to enjoy a more formal restaurant experience. Their premium restaurants are free to all guests, but you need to make a reservation in the morning. We would love to see expanded capacity at the premium restaurants to remove the reservation requirement. If you are a timeshare member, you can have your butler make the reservations for you, but everyone else needs to walk 30 feet from the pool to restaurants to make a reservation. It is such a tough life.

Seaweed

Desire does their best to remove the seaweed that washes up on the white sandy beach overnight, but with the warming ocean temperatures, the seaweed is back every morning. The worst is during sea turtle egg-laying season because they can’t use their machines and must remove the seaweed manually. What makes it so frustrating is Desire has that soft white sandy beach that is so desirable.

Late Night Pizza Wait

After a long night in the nightclub, it really hits the spot to swing by the lobby bar & café to enjoy a pizza or sandwich. Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea, so there can be a bit of a wait to get your food, especially if you go right when the nightclub closes down for the night. We’d love to see them expand the late-night café, but it probably won’t happen since most of the night there is minimal wait.

High Gift Shop Prices

We understand this is a premium resort, and the gift shop is going to charge premium prices. It doesn’t feel nice to spend over $10 on a small sunscreen bottle, especially when you need to wear so much sunscreen every day. Darn that the strong Mexican sun.

Timeshare Trap

Lack of Smart Wristband

Newer resorts give you a wristband that acts as your room key & credit card. Desire’s guest bracelet is nice looking but lacks functionality. It would be great if you could swipe your bracelet to tip the staff because it’s hard having tip money when you are naked at the swim-up pool bar.

Limited Workshop Space

The intimate workshops for couples have really grown in popularity, and they don’t always have space for everyone interested. It is hard to fault them for providing a free service that is too good & attracts too many guests, but that is exactly what we are doing.
